It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of long time volunteer Marvin Buchanan. Marvin is a past Hall of Fame member and past President of USTA Alabama. He will be missed by all that has been involved in tennis.
Marvin Edward Buchanan Sr., age 97, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023. He was born June 2, 1925. He is preceded in death by his wife; Margaret Buchanan, two sons, Marvin Buchanan Jr., and Don Buchanan, parents; Bessie Eileen Buchanan and Brooks Edward Buchanan, a brother; Jack Buchanan and a sister; Ellen Armstrong. He is survived by his daughter; Susan B. Shook (Corey) and a grandson; Edward Shook, three grandchildren; Eddie Shook, Tina Ussery, Corey Shook Jr., and five great-grandchildren.
He was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1992 and served in the United States Navy and was appointed by Governor Wallace on February 26, 1975 as a Honorary Lieutenant Colonel, Aide-de-Camp on his Personal Military Staff. He served as a deacon at Bernie Points Baptist Church which is no longer in an existence. He also owned and operated his own office equipment company.
A public visitation will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Johns Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel located at 800 Dennison Ave. SW Birmingham, Alabama 35211 from 10:00am-11:00am followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00am. Burial will follow immediately in Elmwood Cemetery with military honors.
